India Domestic Relocation Programs
India's domestic relocation programs are designed to address the unique challenges and opportunities presented by the country's vast cultural diversity, varying cost of living, and regional market differences. Nearly half of the companies have a specific policy for domestic moves within India, often managed by Global Mobility teams. These policies are structured to be flexible and scalable, allowing companies to offer differentiated support based on set criteria such as job level, family size, or whether the move is company or employee-initiated. This flexibility is balanced with standardization to better meet the needs of relocating talent.
Eligibility for Domestic Relocation
Eligibility for support in domestic relocation programs often depends on various factors.
- A significant portion of organizations (55%) use job level or grade as the primary factor to differentiate support, while 40% consider family size or status.
- Additionally, 33% of companies vary their support based on whether the move was initiated by the company or the employee.
- Interestingly, 51% of organizations do not have a minimum moving distance requirement for domestic transfer support, but for those that do, the most common threshold is 100 km or 50 miles.
What Type of Support is Provided?
Relocation support typically includes financial assistance through lump sums and coverage of temporary living expenses.
- About 14% of companies pay a full lump sum to cover all relocation expenses.
- While 53% offer a partial lump sum or cash relocation allowance to cover some expenses, with additional benefits provided in-kind or reimbursed.
- Temporary living expenses are generally covered by most organizations, with an average duration of 21.4 days, although 14% do not provide this support.
- Housing assistance is less common, with 93% of companies not assisting with home sale support at the origin location and 51% not offering any housing support at the destination location.
